1956 Memorial and Traditional Hungarian Headstone

The 1956 memorial in Berehove/Beregszász was unveiled on November 17, 2016, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and War of Independence. The monument is the work of sculptor Mihajlo Kolodko. The architectural plans were drawn up by Péter Szarvas, and the metalwork was carried out by Sztepan Rusznak and Vaszil Krivanics. The monument consists of two metal structures resembling wooden grave markers. The rusted, broken-in-two form symbolizes the suppression of the 1956 Revolution, while the intact, shiny structure standing next to it refers to the political transition of 1989–1990 and the continued legacy of the revolution’s ideals. The monument is located in the square in front of the Beregszász train station. The site holds symbolic significance: the movements of Soviet troops and the reprisals following the suppression of the revolution also affected the lives of the Hungarian community in Transcarpathia. Every year, a commemoration is held at the monument to honor the heroes of the 1956 Revolution and War of Independence. The event is organized by the Pro Cultura Subcarpathica civil society organization and the II. Ferenc Rákóczi Transcarpathian Hungarian University, in cooperation with the Hungarian Consulate in Beregszász.
