Commemorative plaque honoring the Hungarian heroes of 1956

A new 1956 commemorative plaque was unveiled in downtown Buenos Aires, on Cerrito Street, near the former Hungarian House. The ceremonial unveiling of the plaque took place as part of a series of central commemorative events involving the diaspora, organized to mark the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Revolution and War of Independence. The initiative not only commemorates the heroes and victims of the revolution but also pays tribute to the Argentine people and the residents of Buenos Aires. The plaque serves as a memento of that historic moment in 1956 when some 100,000 Argentines took to the streets of the Argentine capital to express their solidarity with Hungarians fighting for their freedom. At the ceremonial unveiling, Ambassador Péter Hlinka expressed his gratitude for this historic support; the project was carried out in close cooperation with local lawmakers and under the patronage of Representative Sandra Rey, who also delivered a speech at the event. The installation of the plaque is closely linked to an international initiative launched by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which aims to interactively map and preserve sites related to the 1956 Revolution located beyond Hungary’s borders, as Argentina provided a new home for many of our compatriots fleeing the country following the revolution. In honor of this significant anniversary, in addition to the plaque unveiling, the city’s leadership also made a gesture of goodwill by illuminating four iconic landmarks in Buenos Aires—including the Floralis Generica and the Puente de la Mujer—in the national colors of red, white, and green.
