Traditional Hungarian Carved Wooden Marker
On November 2, 2016, the Hungarian memorial in Christchurch was unveiled to mark the 60th anniversary of the 1956 Revolution and War of Independence. Located in Beverley Park along the Avon River, the wood carvings and metalwork pay tribute to the dedicated work of four Hungarian artisans. The dedication ceremony—co-led by a Hungarian catechist and a Māori priest—was attended by approximately 80 local Hungarians, New Zealand residents, and representatives of the Hungarian Embassy. The monument also serves as a heartfelt expression of gratitude to New Zealand, which took in a total of 1,117 Hungarian refugees after the revolution, about 160 of whom made Christchurch their new home.
