1956 Commemorative Plaque
A plaque located under the arcades of the building at the corner of Victory Street (ul. Zwycięstwa) and Jan Matejko Street commemorates the solidarity shown by the residents of Gliwice with the Hungarian Revolution. On December 11, 1956, upon hearing the news of the dissolution of the Hungarian workers’ councils, the citizens of Gliwice organized a silent demonstration. A crowd of roughly 5,000 people marched through the city center carrying Hungarian, Polish, and black flags. “Enough bloodshed in Hungary!” read their banner. The memorial plaque was erected in 2013 on the initiative of János Tischler by the Hungarian Cultural Institute in Warsaw, the city of Gliwice, and the Council for the Preservation of the Memory of Struggle and Martyrdom.
To the citizens of Gliwice, who courageously and selflessly expressed their solidarity with the Hungarian people after the 1956 Revolution was brutally suppressed
