The 1956/1986 “Hungary 1956: We Remember” Memorial
As part of the Hungarian Cultural Season in Poland, a monument commemorating 1956 and 1986 was unveiled on April 19, 2017, in Warsaw, across from the Hungarian Embassy. The monument symbolizes the spirit of Hungarian-Polish friendship, the shared destiny of the two nations, and their solidarity with one another. On October 23, 1986, the 30th anniversary of the outbreak of the Hungarian Revolution, activists from Fighting Solidarity hung a banner on the fence of Ujazdowski Park, located across from the Hungarian Embassy, bearing the inscription “Hungary. 1956. We Remember. Fighting Solidarity.” The action was captured in a photograph and was also reported in the underground newspaper of Fighting Solidarity.
On October 23, 1986, on the 30th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, activists from “Fighting Solidarity” unfurled a banner at this location, commemorating the events that took place along the Danube at that time. Their action served both as proof of the two nations’ love of freedom and as a symbol of the struggle against the communist regime in 1956, as well as on the eve of its collapse.
