Memorial and plaque at Plaza Hungría in Caracas
The 1956 memorial in Caracas and the adjacent Plaza Hungría are unique symbols commemorating the Hungarian emigration to Latin America and the 1956 Revolution. The plaza and the memorial were unveiled in 2006, on the 50th anniversary of the revolution. Their realization was made possible by the persistent organizational efforts of János Fenyves, the Hungarian Honorary Consul in Venezuela, the cooperation of the local Hungarian community, and the support of the local city government.
The monument's central element is the Hungarian coat of arms, flanked by commemorative plaques in Spanish and Hungarian, as well as the square's name. The memorial not only honors the martyrs of the 1956 Revolution and War of Independence but also expresses the gratitude of the large Hungarian community in Venezuela—including those who emigrated after 1956—toward their new homeland, which welcomed them.
A significant wave of Hungarian emigrants arrived in Venezuela beginning in the late 1940s and especially following the suppression of the revolution, where the close-knit community built an active cultural life. The inauguration of Plaza Hungría and the 1956 memorial was one of the last major shared successes and milestones for the Hungarian diaspora in Caracas, and it remains a customary venue for commemorations to this day.
