1956 Hungarian Revolution Memorial
In this part of town, on the edge of a park, stands the local mayor’s office and the local police headquarters. In front of them is a well-maintained marble plaque with inscriptions in English and Hungarian commemorating the 1956 Hungarian Revolution.
Remember Hungary and those who died for our freedom
The 1956 Hungarian Revolution was fought for the right of self-determination and national independence. Thousands of patriots died in the fight against dictatorship, but they could not free their homeland. These martyrs could free only 200.000 of their fellow countryman who escaped to the west. This monument in memory of the fallen heros, was erected by the grateful survivors, now Canadian citizens.
Stories about this memorial
I first visited Canada in 1997 at the invitation of my partner, who had left Hungary in 1956 at the age of 16, and I spent half a year with him. On my many visits there, I was always deeply moved whenever I stood before the memorial and I felt grateful for the gesture.
