European Hungarian High School in Bavaria

Anonymous submission

The European Hungarian High School (Europäisch-Ungarisches Gymnasium), which operated at Kastl Castle in Bavaria from 1958 to 2006, was one of the most important intellectual and cultural centers of the Hungarian émigré community in the West during the Cold War. Established within the walls of a historic former Benedictine monastery, this boarding school was founded by Hungarian families who had fled abroad after World War II and the 1956 Revolution, with the aim of preserving the Hungarian language, history, literature, and Christian culture within the diaspora. Over the nearly half-century of its existence, the institution has become an international hub: nearly 4,000 students from more than twenty countries across five continents have studied here, making the high school a defining center for identity formation for Hungarians scattered across the globe.

Although funding gradually dried up after the fall of the Iron Curtain, and the school ultimately closed its doors in 2006 due to financial difficulties, the close bonds among former students remain strong to this day. Through the Burg Kastl Alumni Association and community groups such as the Kastli Hungarian High School, former students maintain an active network and continue to return regularly to the traditional Pentecost reunions. The preservation of the Kastl spirit and the cultivation of Hungarian roots are continuously ensured for future generations by the local Scout movements, including the Hárshegy Scout Park, which is maintained by the Hungarian Scout Association Abroad.

We've been on several trips here, and I even put together a commemorative presentation about the place for October 23.
